Free Books on How to Find and Write Grants

Did you know there are 100,000 US foundation and corporate-giving grant programs (like Home Depot) available to nonprofits, government agencies, and school districts…not to mention hundreds of local, state, and federal government grants? In fact, the Grantsmanship Center reports that in South Carolina alone, nearly 1,600 foundations fund millions of dollars in grants and college scholarships annually!

Thirty-five years ago, I founded Research Associates and The Evaluation Group to find, write, and evaluate grants. Since then, our passionate team of grant professionals has secured over 285 grants for school districts, universities, and large nonprofits totaling over $650 million in funding! By analyzing and studying our victories, hard work, and disappointments over many years, we created a 13-step grant development formula that has yielded an estimated 80% success rate when applying for grants.

In pursuit of our purpose, “Creating Opportunities to Improve Lives,” my staff and I trained 25,000 individuals across the nation in the grant writing process. We also published two books, Developing Successful Grants and How to Apply for Foundation and Corporate-Giving Programs, that encapsulate our teams’ vast knowledge and experience in the field. Although I recently retired, Research Associates is still actively pursuing its mission of helping others under the leadership of new company owner Stephanie Marshall, a longtime, passionate employee and highly-skilled grants professional.

To continue “Creating opportunities to improve lives,” we want to share our two books with others free of charge in hopes of helping worthy organizations find funding:

-----

Our first book, Developing Successful Grants, provides a comprehensive overview of the grants process. We take you through our 13-step process in easy-to-understand-terms, covering topics such as: creating an agency infrastructure to determine needs; assembling written agency guidelines on applying for grants; training grant writing teams; finding grant programs; and building agency coalitions to share in the wealth. Then, we guide readers through the journey of writing grant proposals, a process that includes defining problems, explaining them in compelling terms, and creating solutions in the form of unique programs that attract funders’ attention. We outline how to build budgets that not only fund the grant program, but also generate money to help organizations cover ongoing expenses, known as “indirect costs.” The process of applying for grants is very competitive, with points awarded for meeting the funders’ criteria…and only the highest-rated proposals win! In our book, we share many tips and secrets for adding crucial extra points to your proposal, increasing your organization’s chances of receiving funds.

Our second book, Guide for Soliciting Funds from Foundations and Corporate-Giving Programs, includes 100-information-packed pages specifically targeted to finding and writing these privately-funded grants. Requirements for foundation and corporate-giving grants are different than those of government grants, with some requiring only short applications or concept papers! (Reading our first book beforehand is recommended.)
